Retellings of the past
About History Bunny
History is full of stories, perspectives and possibilities for interpretation. It can be explored through major events and everyday stories, through the lives of individuals and the development of entire societies – and it can spark curiosity in countless different ways. History Bunny is an online magazine created as a meeting place for this historical curiosity, with room for a variety of subjects, perspectives and approaches to the past.
But a fascination with history does not necessarily concern the past alone. It can also lie in what has happened to it since. Historical periods, people and events are interpreted, retold, idealised, criticised and put to use by later generations. They acquire new meanings and become part of the stories that later generations tell about themselves.
As my own academic work centres on this interaction between historical periods, it will also be a particular area of interest on History Bunny. I am interested in how historical periods are reinterpreted and retold, as this illustrates that history is never solely about what happened, but also about the meanings we attach to the past and therefore also our understanding of ourselves.
The name History Bunny simply stems from the fact that I have always had a fondness for bunnies, and therefore also particularly enjoy the humorous and sometimes rather peculiar rabbit motifs found in medieval manuscripts. This is why I have incorporated them into the site's visual identity through my own illustrations, where they also serve as a reinterpretation of the past.
Unless otherwise stated in the individual articles, all texts are written by me, Laura Ahrensbach, who also serves as the site's editor. Articles will be available in both Danish and English wherever possible. You can use the language switcher in the upper-right corner to switch between the two versions.
